The Thing about Happiness: The Role of Self-care in Finding Inner Peace and Happiness
In it’s simplest definition happiness is an emotional state that is often defined by feelings of joy, contentment, satisfaction and fulfilment. Defining it for myself has been a deeply personal journey that has involved a lot of self-reflection and an understanding of what truly sets my soul on fire.
This has been a challenging endeavour to say the least because for a long time I equated it to having my finances in order, having a meaningful career, raising my kid okay (well, to the best of my ability), being a good daughter, being a good sister, being a remarkable friend, and above all being a present partner.
The problem with this approach is that I have failed more than once at most if not all of these conditions that I have set for myself. More often than not I have found myself wanting. My finances are constantly in disarray, my career (let’s not even go there), and my child, let’s just say she is a spirited threenager who wakes up everyday with renewed energy and a seemingly singiluar mission: to test my patience to the core of my being.
And so by all means, I have found myself terribly unhappy at certain moments of my life where I have experienced feelings of helplessness, guilt, uncertainty and ultimate failure for not living up to my own personal expectations.
However, amidst the exhaustion and the occasional frustration, I have found a unique kind of joy. One that comes in the midst of chaos and mayhem.
There’s something profoundly rewarding about waking up to the sound of my daughter’s voice calling out “Mommy,” (insert Peppa Pig accent) at 5:30 am in the morning. Each day starts with a challenge because honestly baby girl where are you going at 5:30 in the bloody morning? But it also starts with laughter, discovery, and the pure, unfiltered love of a child.
There’s so much growth that I have experienced in this season of transition into a different career, and so much learning on ways to manage money better in times of scarcity and uncertainty that I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Stop Trying To Do It All
I have learnt to accept that there is no end to this cycle of responsibilities, something always comes up and something always needs your attention. I have stopped striving to excel in every aspect of my life because it often leads and has often led to burnout and a sense of inadequacy when perfection isn’t achieved. By letting go of the unrealistic expectation to do it all, I have opened myself up to greater happiness, better mental health, and a deeper appreciation for the moments that truly matter.
If your happiness is tied to all these aspects of your life are working perfectly and in sync then it’s unfortunate because you will always be miserable. And so the bottom line here is, let’s do what we can with what we have.
Stop Comparing Yourself To Others.
We live in the age of social media and an ever evolving digital landscape that has allowed us to get a glimpse of other people’s lives at the comfort of our small screens and vast imaginations. This means that comparing ourselves to our peers and others on the internet has become an almost instinctive habit. We subconsciously engage in comparison competitions whether we like to admit it or not.
We doom scroll through curated feeds showcasing seemingly perfect lives, professional achievements, and endless adventures, often feeling a pang of inadequacy in the process. It’s hard to admit but I have been a victim more than once. It has resulted in an erosion of my self-esteem, making me question my own accomplishments and happiness. But it’s important to remember that social media presents a highlight reel, not the full story. And so I constantly have to catch myself and notice immediately my mind starts drifting off into instances where I am tempted to compare myself.
Each person’s journey is unique, with its own set of challenges and triumphs that are often hidden behind the scenes. Instead of measuring our worth against others, focusing on our personal growth and setting individual goals can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life. Embracing our own path, with all its imperfections, allows us to find true contentment and self-acceptance.
Engage in Self-Care To Boost Happiness and Self Esteem.
“No amount of regret changes the past. No amount of anxiety changes the future. Any amount of gratitude changes the present.”
―
This quote serves as a reminder of where our focus should lie. Regret over past actions can trap us in a cycle of self-blame, while anxiety about the future can paralyze us with fear of the unknown. Both rob us of the present moment, where life truly unfolds. This realization should be at the core of each of us because in all honesty so much of life is beyond our control.
We are powerful, unique creatures as human beings endowed with intelligence, wisdom and capacity to withstand more than we think, however, we have no capacity to change the past, future or present. We can just shift our perspective by appreciating what we have now.
One of the tools we have to help in our journey towards happiness is self-care. Self-care and happiness, at least for me, go hand in hand, the former leading to the latter. When we take the time to care for our physical appearance, we often experience a boost in confidence and self-esteem. This positive self-image can translate into a more optimistic outlook on life, making us feel happier and more at peace. The best part is it really doesn’t have to be overly expensive.
- Confidence Boost: Engaging in beauty routines, whether it’s a new hairstyle, a facial, a new set of nails or pedicure or simply applying a favorite lipstick, can significantly boost our confidence. When we feel good about how we look, we are more likely to exude positivity and self-assuredness.
- Stress Relief: Beauty treatments such as massages, manicures, and spa visits provide an opportunity to relax and unwind. These moments of pampering can reduce stress levels, allowing us to disconnect from daily pressures and recharge our mental batteries.
- Mindfulness and Presence: Many beauty rituals, such as applying skincare products or practicing a makeup routine, require us to be present in the moment. This mindfulness can help us stay grounded and appreciate the here and now, fostering a sense of inner peace.
The Psychological Benefits of Self-Care
Self-care is not just about external beauty; it encompasses all activities that nurture our well-being. By prioritizing self-care, we send a powerful message to ourselves that we are worth the time and effort, because truly we are all special in our own unique, individual ways. This self-love and compassion can lead to numerous psychological benefits.
- Reduced Anxiety and Depression: Regular self-care practices can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Taking time to care for ourselves helps us feel more in control and reduces feelings of overwhelm. If you are an overthinker like me, then you know how this type of personality is easily thrust into anxiety. I take self care very seriously because it anchors me when I spiral out of control over analysing every tiny little detail of my life.
- Improved Emotional Health: Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can improve our overall emotional health. Whether it’s taking a bubble bath, reading a favorite book, or indulging in a hobby, these acts of self-care help balance our emotions and enhance our mood.
- Increased Resilience: When we prioritize self-care, we build resilience against life’s challenges. By regularly recharging our mental and emotional reserves, we are better equipped to handle stress and adversity.
Practical Self-Care Tips for Inner Peace and Happiness
Incorporating self-care into our daily routines doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming or even expensive while we are at it. Here are some practical tips to help you get started on your journey to inner peace and happiness:
- Establish a Morning Routine: Start your day with a skincare routine that makes you feel refreshed and ready to face the day. This could include cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen. Ensure you remain consistent with whatever routine you choose, this will ensure you get the results you so hope for.
- Schedule Regular Pampering Sessions: Set aside time each week or month for a pampering session. This could be a home spa day, a visit to a beauty salon, or simply taking a long, relaxing bath/shower, whatever works for you really.
- Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness into your beauty routines. Focus on the sensations, smells, and textures of the products you use. This practice can help you stay present and reduce stress.
- Stay Active: Physical activity is a crucial component of self-care. Find a form of exercise that you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, dancing, or a brisk walk in the park. Exercise releases endorphins, which can boost your mood and overall sense of well-being.
- Nourish Your Body: Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports both your physical and mental health. Consider incorporating foods that promote healthy skin and hair, such as fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Connect with Others: Building strong social connections is an essential aspect of self-care. Spend time with loved ones, join a beauty or wellness community, or simply reach out to a friend for a chat.
Conclusion
Happiness and inner peace are within reach when we prioritize self-care. By investing time in ourselves and embracing these practices, we can enhance our physical appearance, boost our confidence, and nurture our emotional well-being. Remember, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for a fulfilling and joyful life. So, take a moment today to indulge in a beauty ritual or self-care activity that brings you joy and watch how it transforms your inner world.
